The boob jab
For decades, the only way to improve on what Mother Nature gave us in the chest department was to go under the knife. It was costly, unpredictable and involved a lot of down time. But now we can get bigger breasts in the form of an injection.
Macrolane can be injected into the breasts, calves or buttocks to give an enhanced shape instantly. There's no bruising or swelling and you can be home within a few hours of the treatment.
Derma Roller
Who would have thought we'd be sticking needles in our faces for the good of our skin? Derma Roller uses tiny micro-medical needles to penetrate the skin, which encourages regeneration and repair, leaving you with smoother, brighter, healthier, younger-looking skin.
It might remind you of the pin head from Hellraiser, but it can be effective at treating acne scars, ageing, sun damage, lines, wrinkles and stretch marks.
The spray tan
Around the 1990s, concerns about sun damage led us down the fake tan route in order to get a sun-kissed look without associated damage.
For years, we were coating ourselves in cream and crossing our fingers (although not literally of course) that our tan wouldn't look streaky, all the while smelling ever-so slightly like a McVities Digestive.
Then the spray tan came to our rescue. We found that standing still while being coated with a fine mist was much easier than contorting ourselves by the bathroom mirror with a messy cream.
Sunless tanning has evolved over the years and it's still evolving now. The Unreal Sunless Tanning system uses a trick called Advanced Seasonal Technology - which basically means it matches your skin tone perfectly. So no more bright orange Ready-Brek glow effect, hurrah!
Restylane
Anti-ageing treatments of old took our baggy skin and pulled it taut to give a smoother, younger look, with the unfortunate side effect of making some look like they'd been caught in a wind tunnel.
Then we realised a way around this problem was to plump up the skin rather than pin it back, and a whole host of minimally invasive anti-ageing techniques began to surface.
Restylane - nicknamed the 'pillow face' procedure due to its plumped up effects in the cheeks - became popular with celebrities in the noughties, with many A-listers being rumoured to have tried it.
Restylane is a gel based on stabilised Hyaluronic Acid (HA) - a substance that naturally exists in the body. It can be used to reduce lines and wrinkles as well as to contour the face and create volume in areas like the lips and cheeks.
Like Botox, it's injected into the skin and can last up to six months.
ghds
These simple little ceramic hair irons revolutionised the 'straight and sleek' hairstyle in the noughties.
Suddenly, everyone from your little sister to your mum boasted locks so smooth and shiny you could see your reflection in them (well, nearly). The ghd (Good Hair Day) company was founded in 2001 and word of the ghd irons spread fast.
Now you'd be hard pushed to find a girl who doesn't have access to a pair. But the real beauty of these irons is that once you grow bored with your straight and sleek barnet, you can create big ringletty curls with them too.
Botox
When scientists discovered Botox in 1887 they thought it was nothing more than a handy anti-serum for Botulism. They couldn't possibly have foreseen that it would become one of the most popular cosmetic anti-ageing treatments of the noughties.
When injected, Botox relaxes contracted muscles that form lines and wrinkles, leaving the skin looking smoother and younger.
We've all heard horror stories about people being left with expressionless faces, but the technique has been honed so that only specific muscles are targeted, leaving the rest of the face to be as expressive as normal, just with less lines and wrinkles.
Botox for your locks
Back in the 1980s, we were all about the frizz, with poodle perms being the order of the day. But the 1990s and noughties had us reaching for the serum and cursing the weather for making us 'fluffy'.
We were introduced to a whole host of searing, heated contraptions designed to eliminate the frizz, but the problem was, as soon as we stepped out in the rain again, we were back to square one.
Cue one of the best inventions to come out of the noughties by far: the Brazilian blowdry, known as 'Botox for your locks' or 'the permanent blowdry'.
This ever-lasting blowdry was created in Brazil over four years ago and brought to our attention by Gil Goncalves, who was the first hair stylist to start offering the treatment.
This magical invention involves the application of a wonderfully pleasant-smelling cream, which (far from being bad for your hair) actually contains Keratin, the natural substance found in hair.
Once the substance has been sealed in with straightening irons and left to do its thing, you're left with hair so smooth and silky, it wouldn't look out of place on a L'Oreal advert and lasts for up to four months.
Prices start from £200 at Neville Hair and Beauty. But you're worth it.
Mineral make-up
When you consider talc is a mineral, most make-up could technically be considered 'mineral make-up' even if they contain as little as 1% mineral. But in 2006 we saw a shift in the cosmetics market, when Australian husband and wife team, Callum and Taleen Young, released the concept of 100% pure natural mineral cosmetics.
This sparked a global 'mineral make-up' explosion, with new brands popping up all over the place touting the 100% mineral concept. From The Body Shop, Clinique, Nude by Nature and Claytime Australia to Max Factor and Natural Minerals, everyone was jumping on the bandwagon.
Now we're reaping the benefits: mineral make up reflects sunlight so it hides a multitude of sins, from fine lines and wrinkles to crows feet, giving a lightweight, glowing finish that's flawless without feeling 'caked on', oily or pore-blocking.
Eyelash extensions
If you see someone on the bus with extra long, thick lashes, chances are she's sporting a set of false beauties a la Cheryl Cole.
Applied by the experts, lash extensions can create subtle or dramatic looks without the need for a gloopy mascara wand. And unlike false eyelashes, they don't need to be removed at night, so you can wake up with gorgeous lashes first thing in the morning (great for the low-maintenance girls among us).
The Powder Lounge (Topshop, Oxford Circus) uses specially shaped extremely lightweight lashes, layering them among your own lashes to gradually build up a light, wide open look, rather than the heavy weighed down look so many false lashes can give.
You can go for 'weekend lashes' to last up to three days; 'holiday lashes' for two weeks or 'bespoke' lashes, which can last up to two months, depending on how long you want your Bambi look to last. And you can choose exactly how short and natural or long and fluttery you want them to be.
Ever-lasting lipstick
Maybelline
There were always some lipsticks that lasted longer than others, but still, however long-lasting our lipstick claimed to be, lingering traces could always be found on a glass or somebody's cheek, and god forbid if we had a cheeky snog.
Drinking, talking and generally breathing would cause lipsticks to evaporate from our lips, meaning we had to keep nipping to the loo to re-apply.
That was before the invention of super-stay lipsticks. Most of them consist of two parts - a colour that can be applied to the lips that dries in as little as one minute, then a glossy top coat, that seals the colour in. These miraculous new lipsticks will stay on through food, drink and even snogs. In fact, sometimes they're still there when you wake up in the morning.
Maybelline and Max Factor have taken the lead in these new generation lip colours, but other cosmetics brands aren't far behind them. Could the noughties mean the end for old-fashioned lipsticks?
From ghds to Botox
From ghds to Botox, mineral make-up to eyelash extensions, the beauty industry has already come a long way 10 years into the new millennium. We check out the best innovations that have made us all feel more beautiful through the noughties.
You might take your ghds for granted as you sleepily run them over your hair in the morning and head to work with effortlessly sleek, shiny locks. For many, they're a part of everyday life, but 10 years ago they didn't exist.
Neither did the spray tan. If we wanted to get an all-over colour back in the 1990s we had to fork out for a trip to somewhere sunny or slather ourselves in a cream that was invariably uneven and smelled strange. Now we can pop out for our lunch break and return with a golden glow (to go with our glossy hair) just like that.
In the past ten years we've seen some real beauty gems arrive on the scene. Here are our top 10 favourites.
2) Shiny foundation: Victoria Beckham
Never one to shy away from the spotlight, Posh may want to think twice next time about getting too close because it sure is bright. Her foundation looks thick and cakey and is much too shiny. Foundation needs to match your skin tone. If it is darker, it will only make your skin look dirty, or ghostly if it is too light.
3) Too many bright colours: Mary-Kate Olsen
5) Excessive eye shadow: Una Healy
The Saturdays formed two years ago, but Una’s eye make-up is straight out of the 80s and should have stayed there. The combination of purple eye shadow on top and turquoise under her eyes is way too much. Eye shadow should only be applied on and above the lid, and if you use two shades, they should be blended at the crease.
6) Eye shadow under the eyes: Ashlee Simpson
Horrendous hair colour aside, Ashlee looks like she hasn't gotten any sleep for days. Her eye shadow is the same shade of brown as any dark circles that would appear, and it doesn't help that the colour completely engulfs her eyes. The only thing that should go right under your eyes is concealer, because it will cover any dark spots and brighten up your face.
7) Bad tan: Amanda Bynes
One too many trips to the tanning bed will have you looking like Amanda, and the Oompa Loompa look is definitely not in style. Neither is cancer, which is too often a direct result of excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Instead, opt for tanning lotion, bronzer or other self-tanners that will give your skin a much more natural, sun-kissed glow.
8) Bad skin: Amy Winehouse
Aside from her outrageous trademark eyeliner, Amy’s blotchy, blemished skin doesn’t go unnoticed. She is in desperate need of foundation and concealer, and maybe a trip to the dermatologist.
9) Dark lip colour: Lauren Conrad
The rule has always been that you are supposed to emphasize one feature instead of wearing heavy make-up all over your face, but Lauren gets it wrong with lip colour that is much too dark for her skin tone. The rest of her make-up is nice and simple, so her lips could have been coloured with a lighter shade of red or pink and still remained the focus of her face without being too harsh.
10) Thick lip liner: Dolly Parton
11) Blue make-up: Jennifer Lopez
Unless you really are in the circus or some other sort of theatrical act, any kind of blue make-up like Jennifer’s here usually doesn’t look too chic. Her indigo eye shadow and eyeliner make her eyes look sunken in, and you should never have to match the colour of your clothes to your make-up. Her gown is blue enough.
12) Nude lips: Kim Kardashian
